WHAT ARE INVASIVE PLANTS ?
Invasive plant species are non-native plants that are introduced-often accidentally,or sometimes intentionally for ornamental or farming purposes-to a new ecosystem.Once established, they spread aggressively, outcompeting native plants for essential resources like sunlight, water and nutrients. This rapid spread poses a severe threat, leading to:
- LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY:They displace native species, reducing the overall variety of plant life.
- ECOSYSTEM DAMAGE:They can alter soil chemistry and water flow patterns.
- ECONOMIC HARM:They can negatively impact agriculture, fisheries and infrastructure.
A plant is considered invasive if it is non-nativeto the local area and its introduction is likely to cause environmental or economic harm.
ABOUT OUR STUDY
Mala gramapanchayath, like many regions in Kerala, faces a growing threat from these aggressive foreign plants species. Our study focuses on identifying and documenting the invasive flora in specific local areas to raise awareness within the community.
The main objectives of this documentation are,
- To accurately identify the most dominant invasive plants in the region.
- To provide local citizens and environmental groups with clear, visual information necessary for effective control and management efforts.
